Well,
that was a flop. This is not exactly a program report or recap. It's more of a complaint/rant/grouse.
Last spring, I had several suggestions in my teen area asking for a Twilight Party. I duly planned such a party, advertised it, had many teens tell me they were excited and interested....and we had 9 people show up. For this program...
- I reserved the community room
- I spent an appreciable amount of time trying to locate someone to do henna tattoos, had people cancel on me, not respond, respond and cancel and finally bought a do-it-yourself kit online (which was excellent, by the way) and a bunch of Dover temp henna tattoos for backup. (all of which cost about $25, but I paid an additional $25 to get it here on time, since I spent so long trying to find a person)
- I made connections with the bead store in the neighboring town and bought supplies (heavily discounted, but still $50)
- I bought $60 worth of black t-shirts to decorate, and fabric paint, I can't remember how much that cost
- I bought cupcake mix, frosting, decorations, and soda
- I spent yesterday evening baking cupcakes
- My aide rearranged her schedule to be here in the evening to help
- We spent an hour taking all the stuff over to the community room, setting up a display of Twilight read-alikes, and preparing the henna
And, we had 2 teens. One of them wasn't even mine, she was talked into coming by my fellow children's librarian in the next town over, who also came. Two kids were 12, one was 11. One of the twelve year olds had her...I guess she's an aunt...and younger sister there, so I invited them in, since they had to stay while she was there anyways. And a young adult, she's in her early twenties, dropped by. So. We had 3 adults, 3 middle schoolers, 1 kid and 2 teens for a program that cost over $100 and took up hours of time.
Why yes, I am disgruntled, frustrated, and tired. Now, I have no problem with the middle schoolers coming. I like middle schoolers. I really like these kids. But if only tweens are going to come, why not just have tween programs to start with? Of course, all is not a total loss
- I gave the leftover mixed up henna to my library-friend Sara for her teens. She has real teens.
- I saved the temp tattoos for a later tween program in the fall.
- I saved the extra bead stuff for a later tween program in the fall.
- We will eat the many leftover cupcakes on Thursday, while the kids are waiting to have their faces painted.
- The staff will drink the leftover soda
- The t-shirts will be used at my t-shirt decorating program next spring break, or maybe next summer
- The books will be reshelved
And I will not be planning any future teen programs. Teen programs require long-range planning, someone with the time, ability, and patience to build relationships. Obviously, one teen program in a blue moon is not going to be successful.
Next summer I'm doing weekly tween craft programs.
As a postscript, this is what my day looked like:
8:45 Arrive at work, fill displays, clean some of the stuff off my desk, finish setting up for storytime
9:30 Preschool storytime. 12 attendees.
10:00 Reset storytime room, continue filling in displays, give out summer reading prizes
10:30 Toddler storytime (Miss Pattie had a prior committment). Deal with extensive complaints about heat and humidity in storyroom
11:30 Drive to the neighboring town (in my un-air-conditioned car) to borrow bead tools and mats from the bead store and as long as I'm there and walking (they are the resort town and there is never any parking) stop by their library to see how their a/c is holding up and if my library-friend Sara has anything new she hasn't told me about
12:30 Stop at home to get lunch and read for a little while
1:30ish Back to work, talk to director about temp. in storyroom, clean up from storytime, collect things for Twilight party, fill in more displays, etc.
2:00 Desk. Deal with inordinate number of people who have apparently never touched a computer but need to do something vital. Deal with our change machine which has decided to eat all dimes and regurgitate all quarters.
5:00 Set up for Twilight party with aide. Inform her she's going to be doing the henna. I love my aide.
6:00 Twilight party. Although I had a small group, they pretty much all hung around until
7:45 Shoo out stragglers, get name of mom who does
marvelous henna, lug everything back into library and dump by my desk
8:00 or a little after. Leave.
And I have to go back early tomorrow around 8 to move the t-shirts into the library. They were too wet to move and there are programs in there tomorrow.
I am tired.
